Two Dozen Crucifixes
Two dozen crucifixes in this house
To remind us of the suffering
Of a bludgeoned corpus of a rebel
Executed
By an empire
Some 2,000 years ago
Yet
We are to obey
Our betters, the experts
The law, the ministers
And take all the wounding
Spitting, bleeding and jeering
Entomb our aspirations
And say
We forgive them
Though they’ve denied us countless times
And they KNOW what they do
Sold out for 30 pieces of silver
Over and over and over again and again
Because
That’s what God wants
And what Jesus would do
Spiritual Toys
Her and her spiritual toys
Rosaries and chaplets
Medals and blessed cards
And not a nice thing
To say about anyone
The tantrums
Yet wanting to be
A very good girl
Among very very bad souls
But Big Daddy upstairs
Doesn’t always indulge
Her plenary indulgences
He keeps moving
The Mark, Luke, John and Matthew
She’s never quite enough
Though she repents and repents
And never puts down her toys
Hoarding them
For the sake of piety
To prove she’s a very good girl
Among broken souls
