Hysteria, by Cassie Frisbie

Writer's picture: Maariya (EIC)Maariya (EIC)

Leannán Sídhe

Unsung bloodstained Muse of man's mythologies,

Prophetess of the love-drunk minstrels her beauty gives the strength to sing

Faerie-food of fervent poetry, and false honey upon which she feeds

Loving her is a dire and desperate thing.

Inspiring in her lover that which she herself cannot create,

And in this passion's fire warms her cold body.

Feasting well on that creative flow, which to a poet is life's blood

Until her prey at last exsanguinates.

To the Wild Gods of Old

Bacchus, in your playful pity

Let me linger here forever,

Reclined among the tree-roots

Beautifully drunk among clear water.

Forever, only myself and my lover

And You, O Pan, undisturbed

By tick or ant, your own sweet,

Soft music echoing from each green

Stone where the young oaks sway.

I now would wish the intruding

Tours away, never to hinder, nor hike

Nor bear witness to our wilderness.

All God’s Children, Time Devours

When you called me from the closet

Your mother couldn’t save you

She’d gone out to the liquor store

And hadn’t thought to tell you

In the end, Kronos devours us all

When my mother sat you at our table

And made you a pancake breakfast

Your eyes shone with the glimmer

From the circlet on my head

In the end, Kronos devours us all

Who would have thought that you would be

The golden child, and I the king of empty halls

In the end, Kronos comes for us all

When we emerge from his digestion

When we emerge from long gestation

In the end, Kronos crowns us all

Ichor dripping from the thorns

About the author:

Cassie (they/she) is a 22 year old poet, aesthete, artist, and plant mom based in Springfield, Missouri. Inspired by both classic Romantic and midcentury Confessional poetry, she seeks to blend these styles into something deeply personal, that puts words to their utmost test, touches the hearts of readers through imagery they can relate to, and honor through artistry the most basic point of language: to make one understand. Cassie lives - of course - in Springfield, with her husband Michael, their tuxedo kitten Colette, and her myriad plant children. Instagram: @cassie.frisbie_poetry
